Palin Opts Against Run for Second Term as Alaska Governor

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday that she would not seek a second term, setting up a potential run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday that she would not seek a second term next year, setting up a potential run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. She said she would resign at the end of this month and transfer power to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell.

Palin made the announcement from her home in Wasilla, flanked by her husband, Todd, and family and state commissioners.

Palin’s decision now allows her to avoid the difficult task of running for president while serving as governor.

Palin gained national prominence when GOP presidential candidate John McCain picked her as his running mate last year. But her approval ratings in the state have skidded in recent months.

Palin has been dogged in recent months by ethics inquiries. Her office last month announced the 15th dismissal of an ethics complaint against her or one of her staff. Palin defeated incumbent Gov. Murkowski in a primary in 2006.

I am speculating that Sarah is doing this for the good of Alaska, we will not see the end of her. I know it. Watch out Obama.

I’m not sure whether this was “politically smart”, but it was a DAMN ballsy move.

She is laying it out honestly in her speech, and it was good.

  2. Sibyl Says:

Afrocity now is the time to institute the plan we talked about on Smart Girl Politics. Sarah will be our next POTUS. Email me NOW

  3. afrocity Says:

You should see these opponents running like chickens with their heads cutoff. Turn on Fox News and watch this dick Bill Kristol, a Palin Hater saying she will fail. Fuck these guys.

These guys are amazing. They are afraid shitless.

    • kywrite Says:

Except Kristol outed Schmidt as the likely leak to Vanity Fair.

      http://weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/06/kristol_liberal_media_and_gop.asp

I think they just don’t know what to make of Sarah Palin. She’s thinking totally differently from the politicans they’re used to — she’s thinking LIKE A WOMAN. ‘Bout time we saw a little of that.

I also believe that the media is miffed because she infodumped them, doing this as a Friday thing. But — she did it because it was post-Jackson nuttiness, but still hit the 4th of July crowd. No one at any 4th of July celebrations or Tea Parties today and tomorrow will be able to talk about anything else. I think in the end, it’s a stroke of genius.

  4. bellamags Says:

No one commenting on this blog has any idea what goes on behind closed doors in the office of a governor. I believe Sarah Palin does have the best intentions for the state of Alaska and this country for that matter. She is not giving up, she is stepping up. She can be a lot more effective and get a lot more accomplished at this point if she is not holding office or having to deal with all the morons trying to ruin her with all the ridiculous ethics investigations. Great way to waste money you fucking idiots.

I think the reason she was “picked on” during the 2008 campaign is that she bucked the system and didn’t put up with any stupid shit from the typical pundits, especially McCain’s staffers. She probably called them out on their bullshit and they didn’t like it. sooooooooooo….. she got pummeled. I don’t think she was totally unaware of the crap that was going to be flung at her, just to the LEVEL of the crap. If Letterman (or any other idiot liberal entertainer or policitian) would have said the same things about Obama’s daughters that he said about Palin’s daughters, they would have been slaughtered. I mean public hanging, drawn and quartered level of punishment. The stupid ridiculous apologies Letterman gave made me want to vomit. Where were all the “feminists” when that crap happened? —–> (crickets) N.O.W. reluctantly defended her. Thats it. One thing that this shows us is the hypocrisy on the left and the veil the feminist movement has over their face. They will only be outraged if you are a liberal advancing a socialist agenda.

OH and I want to give a great big THANK YOU to the fucking womens libbers who have created a society crawling with men that have no BALLS. Thanks you stinky bitches.

    • oblogdeeoblogda Says:

      are you serious? lol

    • Marcy Says:

Mike Huckabee gave the best analogy I have heard regarding the lack of support given to Palin by women’s groups while she was being so viciously and unfairly attacked. I paraphrase, but it was something like — they saw her get hit by a truck, shrugged their shoulders and said, well, it didn’t hit me, and just walked on.

      • afrocity Says:

Mike was fantatsic. He is a nice guy and you are right, his analogy was accurate.

    • oblogdeeoblogda Says:

If my aunty had balls she would be my uncle…who cares -you run your life on cliches – just save the bad language for your potty room lil one! Proud women’s libber of the extreme left – shame you are so angry what a way to live belle maggie

    • Madrigal Says:

“I think the reason she was “picked on” during the 2008 campaign is that she bucked the system and didn’t put up with any stupid shit from the typical pundits, especially McCain’s staffers. She probably called them out on their bullshit and they didn’t like it.”

      I agree with this.

“Where were all the “feminists” when that crap happened?”

Uh….well many of *us* feminists have been here *all along*… criticizing what happened to Hillary & Sarah with ferocity — I don’t know if you have visited any PUMA blogs (besides Afrocity’s)….but many PUMAs have been supporting Palin for a LONNNNNNG time & calling out the sexism of this last year!

Also, lots of conservative women consider themselves feminists & “womens libbers.” Do you criticize these women for being pro-woman in their philosophy (feminism is non-party) as well? Sarah Palin is a feminist…why would you insult a core part of her philosophy as well as women from all walks of life & worldwide?

I’m just trying to find out if you are dumping on all regular every-day women who consider themselves feminists and womens libbers (conservative, liberal, independent, working-class, Iranian women, around the globe, etc.)…

or are you referring ONLY to mainstream, elite level, opportunistic women that call themselves “feminists?”

Many women refer to these cynical, hypocritical, power-hungery types as 3rd wave feminists.

(these types are on BOTH sides of the Dem/Repub aisle)

Elite Insider Republican feminist women did NOT stick up for Hillary Clinton & daughter when the Republican machine was eating her alive while Bill was POTUS….and now elite insider Democratic feminist women are not sticking up for Sarah Palin.

I agree that this year has been horrendous & the sex jokes & jokes about her Down Syndrome child have been beyond the pale…. we have crossed into dangerous divisive times in our nation with race-baiting and hatred of women being generated & promulgated by the elite cocktail-party insiders of the beltway…
The class division in all this…is important to recognize. the limosine intelligensia don’t care about women in any party & 3rd wavers are just there sell-out minions.

However, I don’t think blaming *all* women that believe in women’s rights helps with gaining support & momentum in moving our country foreward and up out of all the crap that we are stuck in.

bellamags, I was really jiving with the 1st 3/4ths of your post until it seemed like you are attacking *broadly* all feminists.

      and regarding the following:

“OH and I want to give a great big THANK YOU to the fucking womens libbers who have created a society crawling with men that have no BALLS. Thanks you stinky bitches.”

      1) I think blaming the existence of asshole guys on women is BullSh!t…IMHO (supposedly women that don’t care about rights for other women produce splendid macho men with lovely balls, eh?)

      2) I am a feminist –Independent and proud of both!! Since you consider me a “stinky bitch” then I will say in response, “your welcome!.” 🙂

I’d rather be considered a stinky bitch by someone ignorant.. that be told that I was talking BullSh!t by someone I actually consider to be sane & respectful of women.

If your rude comments above… directed at women was a joke or hyperbole, then I will happily rescind my snarky replies. Otherwise, if you truly have no respect for women (that support other women), then you are no better in my opinion than the JerkyProgressive guys I have to listen to daily, making my ears bleed with their ignorant blathering chick hatred (Palin these days being women libber target #1).

      • Madrigal Says:

Bella, I just read your comment below & realize you were just venting. My impression now (gratefully) is that you don’t dislike all feminists…. just the hypocritical Fauxfeminists.

They are considered fake feminists because they *don’t* stand up for other women. Being anti-sexism has NO party affiliation….just like believing in fairness, decency, & authenticity belongs to no party.

        Anyway,I rescind my snark.

  5. UberInfidel67 Says:

Ok folks….how do we start putting a stop to the media bashing they are gonna send Sarah’s way. We have to start NOW and FIGHT for her! She has my support ALL THE WAY!!!!! We can’t let them do to her what they did before and we can’t let them treat her the way they treated Hillary….just because they are women! I am getting everyone I know to back her up! Palin 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and in honor of Bellamags, I want to extend a hearty FUCK YOU to all the so-called feminists that are gonna be talking shit on Sarah. Go. The. Fuck. Away.

    • afrocity Says:

We have to speak loudly for Sarah and be heard. I just donated $420 to Sarah Pac.

      • Marcy Says:

My sister and I just yesterday were discussing a rather contentious phone conversation with a caller from the DCCC (I’m shocked they’re still calling — I have not been nice to them and certainly haven’t donated anything); and I told her that just to annoy them from now on, I’m going to say “sorry, but I’m donating all my money to Sarah Palin.” Now I’ll be leaving your website to actually make that donation.

  6. WMCB Says:

The talking heads are cracking me up! Both sides fear her. She is a hell of a lot more conservative than I’d like, but she is as anti-establishment as they come. She IS genuine.

I love that she shakes things up simply by telling the bald-faced truth, and the talking heads crawl all over themselves to figure out “what she really meant”. The concept of someone perhaps meaning exactly what they said is so foreign to them, they can’t wrap their peabrains around it.

I disagree with this woman on any number of things, but I really do LIKE her. Go, Sarah!

    • afrocity Says:

The media has ZERO credibility with me. Talking heads, exactly WMCB

    • LJSNAustin Says:

WMCB, Afrocity, or any other commenter, I would like to be pointed to a succinct list of issues on which Palin has openly and clearly spoken to which any given liberal/(dare I say progressive?) is opposed. I keep reading and hearing people say “I don’t agree with her on many issues…..” yet I just do not feel that way. She’s a bit over-zealous in her religious talk, but I don’t believe she brings it into her governing. The pro-life thing, OK. Other than that, I just don’t see it. (well, she did endorse Rick Perry “Governor Goodhair” and I certainly do NOT agree with that!)

      • Honestly, I don’t recall her saying much about her stand on social policy issues, which is where a lot of the liberal/conservative break down occurs. As for religious talk, I’ve heard a lot more from BO than from Sarah!! She usually mentions her faith as it relates to her personally and to personal decisions (praying about her future, etc.)

She is pro-life and pro-small government, so maybe that’s where the criticism comes in. But, I haven’t heard her say much about other things.

    • Madrigal Says:

The only talking heads I like…. is the music grp by same name 🙂

Yeah, Sarah Palin — “burning down the house!”

  7. bellamags Says:

Sorry for having a POTTY mouth Afrocity, but it seems liberals are the only ones allowed to get angry about anything. Not anymore. I was quiet through this whole thing, but when they started in on her KIDS, man o man, that was it.

    • Madrigal Says:

Hey bellamags, I replied upstairs to your first post. I thought you were dissing feminists of ALL stripes & I was pretty insulted by that. Now I realize that it sounds like you were just venting because of hypocritical crap you’ve had to witness from progressives.

I understand wher you are coming from with the anger, as I was pretty angry listening to Hillary Clinton be called a “whore lover” & “ugly” & “no one would sleep with that hag” & “Chealsea is a dog” & “no one would “F**k” her”, etc…. for 8 years…throughout Bill’s POTUS time (in fact many conservative writers were paid just to create whole fake Hillary stories to play on working-class stereotypes of women not belonging in power… the result was a seething hatred of Hillary, crafted cynically by Republicrat operatives ) – same thing is happening now with Demopublicans writing sick BS to try to destroy Palin.
(edit: same thing, except on roids!)

So I understand about being angry when someone you respect has their family & kids spat on year after year after year … the steam erupts from the boiler eventually.

  8. manbearpig68 Says:

She really blows any “political conventional thinking” out the window and acts like a person that cares about the direction of the country and it’s citizens. I just heard the a DNC spokesperson say how all of SP’s behavior is erratic and bizarre and doesn’t make sense. What doesn’t make sense and seems bizarre to me is 90% of what Obama has done. Which much of is typical of a politician. I’m not sure what she is shooting for in the next few years but I’m sure she’ll makes some very big dents in the system. Her thinking reminds more of our country’s founders than anybody else…

    • afrocity Says:

She is a revolutionist, you are so right manbearpig.

    • Marcy Says:

And what really wouldn’t make sense to me is if she tried to run for office using the playbook of all the other candidates. The Democrats are scared shitless of her and never miss an opportunity to vilify her; her fellow Republicans are not much better; and the media have set a new world’s record for hate. I think this is a smart move. It will benefit Alaska, because they will now have a Governor who will be able to govern without having some frivolous complaint filed against him every fifteen seconds, and Palin will now be able to run her campaign the way she needs to, which is to bypass the media as much as possible. I was not a Reagan fan (I think I’ve mentioned I’m a recovering Democrat), but the one thing I always loved about him was his ability to make the media look like absolute asses. I don’t know if he had those zingers prepared ahead of time or if they were spontaneous remarks, but he always put them in their place. Palin has got to realize by now that she’s never going to be treated anywhere close to fair by them, so I hope she’ll use this time to travel around the country and let people see the real person, not the one the lying media tries to make her out to be.

And I was very disappointed in Charles Krauthammer today dissing her re foreign policy. Hello, Charles, have you noticed who’s in the Oval Office right now? She’s certainly more qualified than he is.

  9. meeee2 Says:

==Hope this doesn’t lead to a double comment. Not sure why I’m caught in moderation.==

Sarah Palin was an effective, well-respected and admired Governor in Alaska until the media twisted her into the politician they wanted her to be. They continue to undermine her ability to get things accomplished without screaming “ethics in question” accusations at her.

I think she’s going to lead the charge toward building a new and powerful party that the PUMA will be proud to join. What Sarah imposes on her own life is different than I want for mine, but I’ve yet to hear Sarah claim her goal is to change policies and laws to suit her personal moral compass. She has said over and over again that she believes we all have the right to make the decisions that are right for us. I voted for her in 2008, and I’ll proudly vote for her again given that chance.

I will eagerly await her next move. My guess is that, whether one likes her or not, women are going to have a lot to thank her for in the future.

    • afrocity Says:

But will they realize it meee2

      • meeee2 Says:

Gosh, I hope so. I think Sarah is a really solid, honorable role model for men, women and children. She’s got more spine and integrity than most, and I’m sure that’s why they are so afraid of her.

      • kywrite Says:

The women at Reclusive Liberal have; they’re all PUMAs.

  10. jbjd Says:

Using a sports metaphor, especially basketball, an athletic pursuit in which she excelled in school, illustrates why this woman is such a threat to so many men: she beats them at their own game.

  11. HT Says:

Bellamags, perhaps you didn’t notice the vile, bilious attacks against Hillary Clinton, before Sarah made her debut? The attacks on Sarah are not a result of feminism, they are a result of the patriarchy who are determined to not allow an XX to ever be in a position of power (goodness, they even attacked Hillary’s daughter before they went after Bristol and Trig). . Patriarchy has no offical party apparatus, it’s rampant in both. This has nothing to do with feminism, and everything to do with the powers that be who want to keep it the way it is, regardless of any label, be it republican or democratic. So please refrain from blaming us stinky bitches who, in the second wave, got you the recognition that you enjoy today as an intelligent human regardless of sex, and almost – almost, got the ERA passed, which would have ensured that what happened to Sarah would have been actionable.
    Knowledge is your friend.

Sorry Afrocity, usually, I just lurk, but that comment was beyond the pale.

    • afrocity Says:

Bella apologized for the remarks to me in a private email.
She was angry for the NOW for not standing up for Sarah.
You are right HT, it is a result of the patriarchy.

Lets all see that as women we are targets Democrats or Republicans.

Bella is a good person she got very heated and angry since the Letterman issue. Some conservative women feel that they will never be respected nor do they have a place to turn to like women who are liberals.

No apologies HT. Your avatar always brings a smile to my face.

  12. boldandbald Says:

Hmmm. This should be fun. Sarah calls it like she sees it. Whether you agree with her or not, you have to admire that much. It will be very interesting to see how the feminist organizations respond to this. I don’t necessarily expect them to publicly endorse her, she disagrees with too many of their core beliefs, but will they defend her against attacks? Although, if she does run in 2012, in all likelihood she will not have Hillary to run against, or any other woman Democrat. So will the feminists put aside the extreme left rhetoric and support her? Hmmm. This should be fun indeed.

    • afrocity Says:

And of course you will love every moment of it. 😉

I have told you B&B if Mitt Romney or Jindal runs, I am not voting at all.

    • WMCB Says:

My guess is that most “feminist mouthpiece organizations” will not, but a lot of Liberal and Centrist women who are just as disgusted with NOW as the republican women are will defend and support her.

  13. Nancy Says:

One of my favorite parts of Palin’s speech was the following –

“Don’t explain: your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe you anyway.”

  14. WMCB Says:

Did anyone notice that little gleam when she mentioned that “they want me to sit down and shut up”?

Whether she runs in 2012 or not, Sarah is NOT about to go away quietly. That ain’t even on this sister’s radar, trust me. LOL!

  15. Nancy Says:

The blogs are on fire – bashing Palin for her supposed lack of intellectual curiosity and lack of worldliness.

I’m so sick of these pretentious ass holes who claim some sort of superiority over others because of where they choose to live, or where they drink their coffee or eat their meals or where they got their degree. People in general are fair more complex than that and deserve better than to be defined by someone else’s idea of who THEY think that person is.

Who says she doesn’t appreciate the finer things? It’s possible to like nice things AND appreciate small town values at the same time. It’s called BALANCE.

    • why does she have to appreciate the “finer things”? We aren’t a monarchy for crying out loud!!

      • Madrigal Says:

and *who* defines the “finer things?”

love & friends & having a job & being able to learn are “fine” enough to me!

I don’t need a Lexus or Waterford crystal glasses or a triple soy latte (with organic nut ‘n’ twig sprinkles) for Pete’s sake!

      • LJSNAustin Says:

        Amen, Madrigal!!
