Obama Voter Autopsy Results Are In: Death by Kool Aid September 23, 2010

As a traditionalist, I have an inherent distrust for movements. I take them on the case by case basis.  This goes for the Obama movement as well as the Tea Party movement.  I am a conservative but I look at candidates on the case by case basis.   Cautiously, I weigh all of the pros and cons, check out the reviews.  Much like when I purchased my new blu-ray player several weeks ago.  Finally, Afrocity is with the high-def movement…but it took a while.  Like a true skeptic, I comb Consumer Reports, ask for the opinions of friends, go to Best Buy and look at their ratings.  Even to myself it is frustrating. Just buy the damn thing already it’s only a television.  It’s only  a restaurant- put down the stupid Zagat’s and let’s go.  From my beginnings.  I hated wasting my time or money on anything.   During my wee years, I was reading an Archie comic book.  On the back, there were advertisements for gags of all sorts.  Disappearing ink, itching powder, X-ray vision glasses,  fake poo,  and the best of all… Sea Monkeys.

My young friends had all tried the other gags. The fake poo was not that exciting and the disappearing ink while funny at first just made someone want to kick your ass for getting their blouse wet… but Sea Monkeys looked great.  We all decided that we would buy a kit. I could have my own little family!

Hours of enjoyment would be spent watching my little Sea Monkey family in their aquatic home. I could watch momma monkey put on lipstick.  We could play patty cake through the plastic tank. Opponents of the Sea Monkey venture were my mother and grandmother.

“Those things are not what they say they are Afrocity,”  warned my mother. “Your brother had some of those and-”

“I WANT MY SEA MONKEY FAMILY!!!!”

“Ok..it’s your allowance.”

As my first mail-order endeavor, I got to walk to the currency exchange and purchase a money order for $3.95 , stick it in an envelope, lick the back of a postage stamp, and skip to the mailbox.  My address was on the money order, not my mother’s- MINE.

This was my little investment.  My real family is on welfare and dysfunctional but my Sea Monkey family will have it going on- dishwasher- Tv dinners every night.

Since at least 500 B.C., I waited for the UPS man and it was agonizing.

“Is it here yet?”  I asked mother bursting in from school.

She would shake her head.

My entire evening was ruined if that package with my mail order family was not there  -even the cartoons would not cheer me up.  Obsessed with the Sea Monkeys, I twitched all day in school just wondering if the package had arrived.  Can you imagine if I had a cell phone?  I would have driven my mother crazy with text messages.

“DID U GET MY PCKAGE?”

Of course my little sea family did arrive and predictably,  it was one of the most disappointing purchases I have ever made in my life.

There was a plastic tank and a packet of powder which were the Sea Monkey eggs.  “Instant Sea Monkeys”  read the label.  According to the instructions I dumped the powder of eggs into the water filled tank and waited, and waited, and waited for Godot with fins.   There were days that I would watch that tank for hours waiting for this large mermaid like family to appear…nothing…I was a sucker.  My friends were also sucked for their Sea Monkey families were AWOL as well.

Minimal humiliation was sparked by mother’s mocking remarks:  “Wow they are huge,”  she exaggerated watching me watch the empty cheaply made tank. “Look they are watching cartoons on the TV and playing “Go fish”.

Like most small children I did not want to admit that mother was right.  As badly as I wanted to throw out the stupid tank, I just let it sit there.  With the passing of weeks, I was largely over the matter  and moved on to other things but mother decided to give me a second chance at sea life.  One day after school, my Sea Monkey tank had transformed into a huge bowl with three goldfish.  They were swimming around and alive.  Rock and little fake plants and little pink houses for them.  Glee was what I felt. Glee that had been robbed by the Sea Monkey suddenly returned tenfold.

“Where did these come from ?” I asked excitedly. “Are they mine?”

“Those are the Sea Monkey’s they changed just like the comic book said they would while you were at school,” she lied. “Too bad you were not here to see them change. Oh, the tank rumbled and shook and it got to small for them so I had to get another.”

“No they did not,”  I laughed.  I did not care that she was teasing me. My goldfish were better than stupid Sea Monkeys any day”

Lesson learned?  If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is and do not buy the hype.   After being taken by the Sea Monkey scam, I always  make certain that anything I invest my time or money in is solid and seaworthy before I jump on board.

That also goes for Sea Monkey families in the White House and my precious vote.  Oh look at the cute little African American family playing in the Oval Office- they promise to deliver change and hope. OOPS- disclaimer-  I am not implying that the Obama’s are monkeys as in racially derogatory terms.  I am comparing my Sea Monkey experience with that of Americans who voted for this perfect Utopian post racial presidency.   Obama promised that our lives will be fundamentally different.  He gave his supporters drinks of  Kool Aid and campaigned a hole in their heads.

Case in point, this Obama supporter:

Aw, golly arugula!  Somebody’s  Sea Monkey did not turn into a goldfish- and it was supposed to come with a cushy job and unicorns too.  To make matters even more pathetic, in a move as old as history itself,  the fooled went back to the fooler for answers and got more change, hope and Kool Aid.

Sure, Barry we still cool.

Who has grounds for concern or criticism of Obama, aka “the anointed one” when he flashes that million dollar man march smile?

Maybe I am out of the norm here, but do you see anything about this woman’s statement that is remotely huge toothy smile worthy?  His grin… frankly, would have insulted me and I would have told him so.  More surprising was the acceptance of his answers to these people by many on the left.

So she is a plant now? Because???? She is African American and not falling over at Obama’s feet?

Sure keep drinking whether that is tea or Kool Aid.

Keep your minds open. Democrats or Republicans did not get us where we are today.  Stupidity did.

It is never easy to reconcile a bad decision but it is even harder to do so if your repeat that decision again and again and again.   You cannot really blame the candidate.  You can’t hunt him down.

You can’t whine ” you promised me the moon on steroids and all I got was this lousy Obama dress“  Correction: this VERY lousy Obama dress.

Obama did not make you pull the lever and vote for phony change. You did.

Next time before you attend a rally with millions of star struck potential voters and Greek temples made of Styrofoam don’t drink…THINK.

Live From The Obama Fallout Shelter July 27, 2010

There are certain times in life, when I maneuver conflict more gracefully than others.  For the times I don’t,  I retreat. Which is why I have been a non blog posting flake for the last two months.  Remember the old Afrocity who used to post once or more a day?  What happened to her?  Did she turn liberal again? Is she floating in the Chicago River face down with a “Sarah Palin  is a Cunt” tee shirt tied around her neck?  Clearly the victim was strangled before she was murdered and it was staged to appear as though the right wing turned on the poor misguided African American conservative.

And here lies the question.

Who can you trust nowadays?

Honestly, (and my dear readers will never have me any other way)  there are days when both sides get on my nerves.  Yes liberal readers, Afrocity does get fed up with conservatives at times. The abortion issue is one of those times.   I do not need the Christian Coalition Against Choice task-force sending me emails every time I author a pro-choice piece.

“It is not about government interference or privacy, it is about murder and against God’s will…yada, yada, yada, yada”

Nothing will make me anti-choice.  Sorry conservative Charlie.  And while we are at it, nothing will ever make me protest gay marriage.  It is not my business.  Having said that, you will never see Afrocity at a gay marriage rally either.  I check my activism at the door when it comes to matters concerning religion, life, death, abortion and marriage.  Meddling often overrides political common sense.  Gay marriage and abortion, have no place in a political discussion.  Both issues unnecessarily divide women and men who may otherwise choose different political parties if the conflict did not exist.  According to liberals, Sarah Palin could never be a feminist because she is pro-life.   In the world according to ass,  pro-life women do not want equal pay or the right to vote.  Why would a pro-life woman care about matters concerning breastfeeding in public or day care?  Pro-life women must love getting sexually harassed at work.

Only liberal women care about that sort of thing you know.

Resolutions to the abortion issue will never follow my lifetime because really, both parties do not want the conflict to end.  It creates much needed political tension and division.

Without divisions, there would be no base.

And speaking of political division… Democrats, before you begin licking your donkey chops, you should know that conservatives- the group with whom  I identify with the most- annoy me far less than most liberals do.  Far, far, far, far less.

The liberal tourist traffic frequenting the FOX NEWS/New Black Panther Party drama coupled with the press attention over the NAACP and the Tea Partiers has of late rendered me politically tone deaf.  Although the NAACP was useful during some stage in American history, after taking a look at their website site recently, I do not know what the hell they are doing besides fueling… well…racism.

Take a look at the lovely online exhibit of racist Tea Party signs the NAACP has curated:

I cannot tell you what the NAACP hopes to accomplish with this. You cannot truly fight racism unless you first cut the cancer from your own hypocritical backsliding throat.  Racism is racism.  You cannot call it racism when it only effects your special interest group.

This is the NAACP’s  pledge to “repudiate racism” in the Tea Party

  • I believe all Americans have equal rights and equal value.
  • I cherish the diverse cultures, beliefs, and values of America.
  • I believe we can disagree without being disagreeable.
  • I repudiate all acts of racism and hate, both in words and action.
  • I have faith in the promise of America – a promise built on mutual respect, common civility, and hope for a better tomorrow.
  • I commit to building that better America by participating actively and peacefully in the democratic process.
  • We are one people. We are one nation. I’m an NAACP American

That last line really troubles me. I am an American first.  Yes I am an African American.  I am a female who happens to be black.  I am surely not an “NAACP American”.  What does mean anyway?  Exploring the pledge further makes me wonder if the NAACP actually followed their own advice in the past and enforced the PLEDGE when the following Democrats said:

You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? … Only if they had the hotel staff in here.”–Howard Dean

I’ve seen a lot of white niggers in my time” – Robert Byrd

He [RNC Chairman Michael Steel]has a career of slavishly supporting the Republican Party.“–Democrat Steny Hoyer

He’s [Clarence Thomas]  married to a white woman. He wants to be white. He wants a colorless society. He has no ethnic pride. He doesn’t want to be black.” -California Democrat Diane Watson

Would the NAACP ever hang this picture at headquarters?

Where was the NAACP when Condeleeza Rice was branded an Aunt Jemima along with colorful images of her clad in a red do rag and mammy doll’s clothing?

Where was the NAACP when African Americans made racist remarks against Hillary Clinton supporters- especially black Clinton supporters?

“At the end of the day, Hillary is still a white woman.”

Those words were spoken to me by my aunt- a rabid Obama supporter.  Her worry was that black women would vote for Hillary over Obama because she was a woman.  Auntie was simply reminding her politically wayward niece that color trumps gender.    I will not get into the narcotic Kool Aid dependencies of Obamabots in this post, but I knew auntie was inhaling and sending her last dollar to the Obama campaign. Her will to see beyond race was compromised by her commitment to righting the political wrongs of slavery and bondage.  In essence , African Americans were becoming everything they used to hate.

What a sad delusion.

What an abysmal state of mind to be stuck in.

The Democratic party- the party of equal rights, tolerance, diversity and most of all liberalism, is on auto-destruct mode.  Such a reversal of misfortunates.  You were once racist against me so that give me the right to be intolerant and racist against you–FOREVER.

Within the analogy of annoyances between conservatives and liberals,  everything depends on what I can and cannot morally stomach.  I hate hypocrisy.  At least the religious/holier than thou trope has always been a staple amongst conservatives. Republicans are pretty consistent about being anti-choice, anti- government and self-knowingly quite hypocritical about it.    Along with the heavy moral quotient, regardless of any fallacies committed along the way, the elephant is usually not delighting in the enslavement of identity politics. The elephant does not suffer from amnesia when it comes to the Civil Rights Era.  The elephant is not involved in some KoolAid/cult of personality  addiction narrative that seems to follow their most successful leaders (Kennedy/Obama).   The elephant in my view is not dispensing hopium to its patients and quickly escaping on a jet to play a hundred rounds of golf in Hawaii.

Is all hunky dory on the right side of the tracks?

No, of course not.  I would be lying if I said it was.   I battle everyday to get conservatives to understand why some of us Americans want to be called African Americans.  If I want a hyphen, then damn-it I can have one.  When I expatriated from the Democratic Party, I did not stop being African American.  If the GOP wants more people of color , they will have to market the brand in a way that does not compromise the values of conservatives; while at the same time showing us that it is okay to be proud of one’s ethnicity.  No watermelon cart is needed.  You don’t need a reparations bill to get African Americans to join the conservative party. Just be yourselves and show them what you stand for and how it can benefit them.

Someone may listen.

I did.

Well, back to the shelter…I may crawl out in a few days when I run out of Beanie Weenies and Gatorade.  Visit if you choose but be warned… I do not allow Kool Aid or Barney Franks.

Barack Obama: There Could Be Mo’ Better Presidents June 8, 2010

From Gutter Politix

My central point against Barack Obama becoming President of the United States has always contended that he is an empty suit.   Like tofu,  whatever you flavor him with, he will comply and satisfy your hungry drooling for hope and change palate. He is not a leader, he is a game piece-  a strange brew of  FDR, John F. Kennedy, and Jimmy Carter mixed in with the arrogance of Napoleon and half as good oratory gifts of Dr.  Martin Luther King.   Still, Obama’s  presidency is more often contrasted with that of Abraham Lincoln’s.

Lincoln, who is widely known in American societal memory as “the guy who freed the slaves”,  deserves better comparisons than Barack Obama.

While one president  freed slaves, the other has become one by couching his words and actions to comply with any hint of criticism from the far left.  Moonbat protest groups, crazy pimp so-called black leaders such as Al Sharpton,  and of course the most important group to Obama of them all-  people who have sizable influence in the entertainment indsutry.  Actors, directors,  producers, fashion designers,best-selling authors, comedians, musical artists, key grips, mimes, Shrek, Lassie, and of course Spike Lee.

Now there’s someone our president should  listen to.  Go OFF Obama.  Get ghetto on BP.  Act like a brutha!!!! Tell those corporate hacks off black man style.  You are the first black president and we expected you to act….well black.  Everyone knows that as a black man, your brown skin coolness and macho mojo is more relevant when you get street on someone.  You are the HNIC (Head Nigga’ In Charge) and you are in a relative pin with this BP crap. The Vlasic Pickle Pelican is being posted all over the internet slathered in oil.

Man you better do somethin’ before we make the white liberal environmentalists who voted for you angry.  Yeah, yeah we know that caring about foliage, Dutch Elm disease,  falcons, the mating patterns  and predatory relationships of  the Rockey Mountain Timber Wolf  is not exactly a “black issue”  but you gotta at least look like you give a damn.  Word, black folk don’t even go camping but just look angry so we can get back to the important issues that blacks care about like government run healthcare and illegal immigration.  This BP oil spit thing here is a distraction.

Pelican covered in oil found on the Louisiana Coast June 3rd, 2010. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

Being the black king playing piece on the liberal chess board, Obama moved to the strategic square that he was told to.

Wow.  Barry wants to know whose ass needs to be kick.  How fucking eloquent and presidential.  However, Spike Lee told Obama to “go off” and in his own wimpy way, Obama listened and not so explicitly delivered.  What a radical re-articulation of our nation’s highest office.  You mess up and Big Brutha Obama is gonna kick yo’ ass, and blame Bush later.

Why?  Because Spike Lee told him to.

A reoccurring theme in great visits to the White House are not those of foreign dignitaries.  Screw the British Prime Minister! He is small leg of mutton potatoes when you can have Jay-Z , George Clooney, and  Brad Pitt playing Grand Theft Auto with you in the Oval Office.  Put Scarlett Johansson in your  fav five.  Throw the Indian dude from the Harold and Kumar movies into your administration, maybe get a lifetime supply of White Castle Burgers for Sasha and Malia to go along with those late night serenades from the Jonas Brothers.  Now that is what I call effective networking.  America- One nation under 20th Century Fox, divisible, without liberty and legalized pot in every chicken for all.

Diversity Fatigue Friday: The Unknown Historic Moment Quantity May 21, 2010

From I own the world

Barack Obama campaigned for his presidency during a time that the majority of Americans wanted anything that was the antithesis of George Bush. Couple that desire with the juxtaposition of the Obama persona with such African-American icons as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, one can surely understand how the combination was a winning David Axelrod formula.

The climate wave was change, hope and the promise of a historic moment.   My PUMA counterparts did not buy into it. They had found a suitable candidate in Hillary Clinton.  Hillary offered the promise of brains, experience, substance and of course- a historic moment.  Hillary offered something in different forms . She was the best man for the job and she would have be the first female President of the United States of America.   It was clear that Hillary was more qualified than Barack Obama. Yes there was baggage but I can argue that one can expect baggage with experience.  I can tolerate some baggage depending on what kind it is.  Okay so, Hillary voted for the war on Iraq.  For me, that was a moot point.  We were already in it so let’s finish it.  I can accept that over a vote for TARP.  It was not like Obama really cared about foreign policy. Besides, Barack Obama was not in the U.S. Senate  when the vote on Iraq was taken.  How did we know what he would have done?  He was an unknown quantity.  Yes there was some information out there. The kind that was only broadcast on Fox News. The kind that Obama supporters did not want to hear about.

How were we supposed to know how Obama would have handled 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina? An economic crisis?  A major oil spill?

How did we know that he was not the same ol’ Washington Politics? Business as usual?

Now we do.

From this article at Townhall.com:

Over the Rainbows

by Jonah Goldberg
May 21, 2010

…He came into office promising rainbows and puppies for everyone and has, like Pizza Hut during a blizzard, failed to deliver. Now, before some intern at a left-wing media watchdog outfit spits Diet Snapple out his nose in outrage over my “fabrications” and “distortions,” and fires off some canned protest e-mail, I do not literally mean to suggest that Obama promised voters rainbows and puppies. Rather, I mean it figuratively. He did literally promise to change the way Washington works, unify the country, govern from the center, work with Republicans and operate the government in a fiscally responsible way. That hasn’t happened. You could look it up.

The White House desperately wants the story to be “Voters Mad at Washington,” not “Voters Mad at Democrats” or, heaven forbid, “Voters Mad at Obama.” But the simple truth is that all three things are true, and Obama deserves much of the blame.

Jay Cost, an indispensable election analyst at RealClearPolitics.com, has it exactly right: ” ‘Change that you can believe in’ has gone from an over-worked campaign slogan to an unfalsifiable hypothesis. Vote for a Dem, you support the President’s agenda for change. Vote for a GOPer, you support the President’s agenda for change.”

This spin has been a long time in coming. After the Scott Brown victory, the White House claimed that the Republican’s win was a manifestation of the same political forces that brought Obama to power, even though Brown opposed Obama’s agenda, and despite the fact that Obama lustily endorsed Brown’s opponent, Martha Coakley. Who, by the way, wasn’t an incumbent. She promised to advance Obama’s “change” agenda, and she lost. But Obama’s just so awesome that what would be political losses for lesser mortals must be more winning proof of his supercalifragilisticexpialidociousness. Because as far as this White House is concerned, nothing is ever Obama’s fault and everything is proof of how much we need him.
It’s an odd position given how the people who need him least are candidates from his own party
.

For those of you who claimed to have voted for Obama because he was a fresh, unfettered, unknown quantity – a historic moment… Tell me.  how do you feel about your choice now?

Barack Obama and his Disease NOT to Please March 18, 2010

When Bret Baier of FOX NEWS stepped into President Barack Obama’s parlor for a lengthy interview yesterday , all arrogance and subterfuge broke out from the mouths of the two-faced chosen one.

When it comes to getting to the heart of the matter with the head of our nation, there are no logical underpinnings. Only a smarmy and disturbingly dismissive air  that is and will always be the true nature of Obama.   There is no sense of openness with this guy. The house is full of glass –breakable objects with “DO NOT TOUCH” signs –such as his ego.  Look at it, admire it, but don’t you dare touch it or you may get shocked.   Because his clenched lipped, wide toothy smile is an extension of his fake demeanor, I am not quite certain how much forced effort he expends per appearance to actually endear himself to the public.

I will bet anyone a tall frothy mug of root beer that Obama ran to some back room and punched some poor unsuspecting well wallpapered White House wall  after his FOX interview.

Bravo to Bret Baier, for not falling for the ol’ Obama long drawn out response trick. Bravo to FOX NEWS for not rolling over and playing dead like nearly every other media outlet known to man.

I love the way Obama is dismissive of Bret’s email examples.  Emails from ACTUAL PEOPLE.  Not his Kool AID punch drunk adoring fans who are planted like acorns at town hall meetings.

So reminiscent of Obama’s “I HAVE A BRACELET TOO” moment during a 2008 presidential debate.

Has anyone ever told you that you are too nice?  That you are “a pleaser” ?  You care too much about what others think?   For every disease there is its evil twin.  The twin of “the disease to please” is named Barack Obama.

Obama’s lack of concern for Americans is not hidden in some deep dank, dark place beneath the surface… It is on the surface.

There is no “at first sight he seems compassionate” .    At least for smart voters like myself there wasn’t

Any intelligent, discerning voter can see that it is in Obama’s DNA not to please.  There is something more important in his life than you and that’s HIM.  Make no mistake that his inner house is full of glass. His brain has skylights and trap doors, no expression of true warmth and held together with steel and concrete beams, 40 tons of granite.

Ultimately this man is a with-holder.  While voters were douching their minds with  hope n’ change, Obama was cocooning his ego in the love bath.

Whatever originally attracted anyone to vote for Obama is beyond me.  His ego is his driving force, not the will of the people.   There is no well being center oasis in the desert.  Any attempt to reason with him will cause the “Uh, UH” responses and the dreaded “LOOK”.   Obama wants to keep things as fluidly slick and deceptive as possible.  When you touch the glass, it breaks and will cut you.

Hopefully in 2012 what felt so right to voters in 2008, will feel so wrong.  Whether any of his behavior and broken promises inspire his supporters to CHANGE and hope for something better, is entirely up to them.

People like me are just the messengers of the obvious message.

Thursday Stitch n’ Bitch: The Declaration of Independents January 14, 2010

Official Tea Party Movement Symbol

The year 2010 is an anxious time for all, especially Republicans and conservatives. Obama is breaking promises, and there will be plenty of angry folks this year seeking “hopenchange” again but not in the form of a light skinned guy named Barry.   Like many Republicans I am looking forward to kicking some donkey butt in the 2010 elections.  Or at least I thought I was like many Republicans or conservatives or independents…Which is it?  Anyway after a long exchange on my Facebook page with some Tea Party Patriots, I was told that I am an uninformed Republican voter. Who was duped by the Democrats once and now I am being duped by Republicans.  “Third Party is the only way to go”, they said.

And it’s not going to happen either! The elites and the radicals have highjacked our country and they WILL NOT give it back by us dumb ass SHEOPLE voting in a bunch of corrupt REPUBLICANS!”…But if a good candidate were to decide to run on a 3rd party ticket, I would vote for him or her over the other two even if he/she lost and all of you gave me shit over it. I voted for Perot 2x, but not a 3rd party since because there was no strong runner. WE NEED NEW BLOOD! A WASHINGTON OUTSIDER! THAT ISN’T BOUGHT OR FINANCED BY ANYONE BUT THE PEOPLE!”

“I’m going to be the odd man out here. We have a Marxist because of the 2 party system as it currently operates. Nobody can deny it. The GOP is ‘almost ‘ as corrupt as the Democrats. And if the polls hold on the question of a “Tea Party” having a candidate in a three way race, the TP is smoking the GOP. So just who is splitting the vote. AS for… See More me I am not voting for Republicans. I may vote for a conservative who is a Republican- maybe.”

I just lost all respect for Palin. F*ck the two party system! It sucks major ass! Parties are un-American. We’re not supposed to have them. Parties are for democracies. We’re not a democracy. We’re a republic. Parties have no place in republics. In a republic, politicians are supposed to be non-partisan aka independent. Republicans and Democrats are BOTH taking us down the wrong path. I only align myself with the Constitution!”

Afrocity is not so sure about a third party movement...even if it were a Tea Party

Yes, Obama failed many particularly those who voted for him.

Bush failed many as well. Let’s not lie about that granted it is not fair for the liberals to continue to use “Bush’s fault” as an excuse for everything under the sun.

But does this all mean that we adopt a third party?Because for the last 9 years we have elected flawed leaders  to our nation’s highest office?

The independents seem to think so.

First let’s take a look at what Obama promised and did not deliver. Does it have more to do with him and his character than the Democratic Party in itself? The answer is yes and no. The Democrats chose the wrong nominee as the Republicans did in 2000.  Every party is capable of the bait and switch described by Karl Rove in this article in the Wall Street Journal:

JANUARY 13, 2010,

The President’s Bait-and-Switch Operation

Which campaign promises has he kept?

By Karl Rove

“Americans learned last year that President Obama discards campaign promises like most people discard used Kleenex. Among the pledges he cast aside were reducing the deficit, reining in federal spending, not allowing lobbyists to work in his administration, increasing taxes only on those who make more than $250,000, and opposing “government-run health care” because it is “extreme.”
This year, Mr. Obama is picking up where he left off.
Consider presidential signing statements. Since Andrew Jackson, presidents of both parties have told Congress that while they are signing a bill into law, they intend to ignore specific provisions because they involve unconstitutional restrictions on the executive branch or are otherwise problematic.

A president’s power to do this springs from his oath of office, through which each new chief executive promises to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.”
Because of Washington’s hyperpartisan atmosphere, President George W. Bush drew heated criticism from Democrats for his signing statements. Among his toughest critics was Barack Obama, who in a questionnaire for the Boston Globe in 2007 accused Mr. Bush of “clear abuse” in using signing statements “to avoid enforcing certain provisions . . . the President does not like.” He promised not to use signing statements to “nullify or undermine congressional instructions as enacted into law.”
Yet Mr. Obama started issuing signing statements shortly after taking office. Democratic Reps. Barney Frank and David Obey called him out on it in a letter to the White House complaining that they were “chagrined” that Mr. Obama was issuing signing statements.
Recently, the Obama administration admitted that after receiving the letter from Messrs. Frank and Obey, it stopped the practice. But the president still has aides examine each bill to identify provisions the administration will disregard. It’s just that Team Obama isn’t telling Congress which provisions it is ignoring. It’s right for him to defend the office of the presidency. The problem is that he is doing it in a way that violates his own standards of transparency and accountability.

It was always puzzling to me as to why any logical person would believe anything that oozed from Barack Obama’s mouth.  His previous record and experience never proved anything beyond his reputation for securing one position and shortly thereafter  running for another position of higher profile before accomplishing anything of real importance. Liberals often love to brand Sarah Palin as a quitter because she resigned as Alaska’s governor before her term was finished.  No one recalls that Obama was only the Senator of Illinois for a short time before he ran for POTUS.  While a valid argument could be waged that Obama’s actions do not exactly constitute quitting , still closer attention should be paid to the motives behind his leaving his Illinois senate seat after accomplishing nothing.  Sarah left office to unburden the people of Alaska with a lame duck and ever growing law suits against the state by greedy mean-spirits and opportunists.  Obama ran for president because…. Oh I forgot, Michelle Obama supplied us with that answer:

“Barack is one of the smartest people you will ever encounter who will deign to enter this messy thing called politics.”

According to Webster, the definition of deign is: condescend: do something that one considers to be below one’s dignity.  Oh gee thanks Barry.  You see we should be thankful that  God sent Barack Obama to us. Now we can be delivered unto the Promised Land. That was Obama’s motive, to give us the gift of his wisdom. To get in our faces.

"Back of Bus" cartoon by Erin Bonsteel from "American Thinker"

Karl Rove continues:

“This hypocrisy has not gotten much attention. But another act of duplicity has. During his campaign, Mr. Obama pledged that any negotiations on health-care legislation would be broadcast on C-SPAN, “so the American people can see what the choices are,” and not conducted behind closed doors. “Such public negotiations,” he said, were “the antidote” to “overcoming the special interests and the lobbyists who . . . will resist anything that we try to do.”

Internet publisher Andrew Breitbart collected videotape of Mr. Obama making the same promise eight different times in 2007 and 2008—evidence that this was not a hasty or ill-considered pledge. It was supposed to epitomize the “change” that was at the core of the Obama campaign.

Now, however, the final negotiations on health-care reform are being conducted behind closed doors and there’s no formal legislative conference between the House and Senate, which would guarantee Republicans at least a few seats at the table. This bill is not only being written in secrecy, it is being written by an anonymous group of Democrats. We can therefore throw Mr. Obama’s commitment to bipartisanship onto his mountain of broken promises…”

Here is the video by Breitbart that Karl Rove alludes to:

I am less surprised by the die hard liberals who fell for Obama’s crap than I am by voters who characterize themselves as “independents”.

In 2008,  I helplessly watched as my independent voter friends emerged one by one from Obamabot pods covered in a Kool Aid purple slimy substance.  There are some pretty intelligent thinkers among the independent voting block. Their modes of inquiry into the lives of and motives of presidential candidates are legendary.

So why did they fall for Barack Obama?

And why exactly should Afrocity follow them to the promised tea party land?

I want no misunderstanding here. I admire those who actively participate in the Tea Party Movement. Voices need to be heard. I am amused by it. I love the patriotism that Americans are displaying. Am I politically or emotionally committed to the movement…No.  I am not exactly sure if we need a third party.  I saw what Ralph Nader did for the 2000 presidential election.  In theory,  a multi-party system is very American. George Washington hated political parties. In reality, they can also screw up some really great elections and in 2012, I do not want our country to end up with a second term for Barack Obama. Thus I do not quite understand why some anti-Obama voters would want to support third party candidates during the 2010 and 2012 elections. Aren’t we playing right into the liberals hands?

Thursday Stitch N’ Bitch: Obama Speeches are worth pennies on the Square Foot. January 7, 2010

It is easy to remember this iconic You Tube video of the young Obama supporter who believed that Barry’s election to POTUS would mean that she would not have to worry about  paying her mortgage:

Little did she know that Obama’s historic election and the economic downturn which continued to ensue afterwards would lead to a revision of what Americans saw as “home”.  Personally, I have never been a homeowner. There were certainly times when I wanted to be one but living in expensive cities like New York City, Chicago and graduate school in Boston kept me financially out of the real estate market.  At times, I was obsessive about owning. I felt like a failure for not paying a monthly mortgage- at least a mortgage that belonged to me and not the landlord I was paying $2650 a month to for my Upper Westside apartment in Manhattan.  Being a home owner is the “American Dream” and I am not with it.

This unified narrative that “home ownership is the American way” played out in the form of envious tension within my friendships. I admit to a jealous wince  here and there whenever a friend announced “We just bought a new home”.  Granted they often lived in Hinky Dink, USA aka the “burbs” . Still, It was something to call their own while I was writing monthly checks to Ackbar Goldstein for my 500 square foot haven just blocks from Fairway and Urban Outfitters.  I pay dearly for my city living.  I shamelessly stored my Christmas items in boxes in plain sight with only a nice sari cloth thrown over them.  Those boxes doubled as seating for my guests when I dared to have a party with 14 people in my UWS box apartment.  New Yorkers understood me. Hell at 500 square feet, my place was a mansion to several of my friends who lived in apartments that equated to a walk in closet by suburban standards.  Afrocity was a lucky girl in NYC and now that I have moved up to a $1850 a month 920 square footer!!!

I am a lifetime renter. I accept it and I embrace my failure at achieving the American Dream.

Now that I have admitted to my loserdom, it might seem almost twisted that I smiled when I saw this bit of news in today’s Wall Street Journal:

U.S. Now a Renters’ Market

With Apartment-Vacancy Rate at 30-Year High, Landlords Cut Prices 3% in 2009

January 7, 2010

By NICK TIMIRAOS

Apartment vacancies hit a 30-year high in the fourth quarter, and rents fell as landlords scrambled to retain existing tenants and attract new ones.

The vacancy rate ended the year at 8%, the highest level since Reis Inc., a New York research firm that tracks vacancies and rents in the top 79 U.S. markets, began its tally in 1980.

Rents fell 3% last year, according to Reis, led by declines in San Jose, Calif., Seattle, San Francisco and other cities that had brisk growth until the recession.

In New York City, the vacancy rate improved by 0.1 percentage point for the second straight quarter, but around 60% of rental buildings dropped their rents in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter. Effective rents — which include concessions such as one month of free rent — fell 5.6% in New York last year, the worst since Reis began tracking the data in 1990.

Landlords now must entice tenants to renew leases. “We’ll shampoo their carpets. We’ll paint accent walls. We’ll add Starbucks cards,” said Richard Campo, chief executive of Camden Property Trust, a Houston-based real-estate investment trust that owns 63,000 units. He said the first half of 2010 should be “pretty ugly,” but was optimistic the sector would pick up later in the year.

Few markets have been spared. During the fourth quarter, vacancies increased in 52 markets, while they improved in 17 and stayed flat in 10. Vacancies increased most sharply for the year in Tucson, Ariz.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Lexington, Ky.

Vacancies are tied to unemployment, because many would-be renters move in with family members or double up during a downturn. Apartments have been squeezed because younger workers, who are more likely to rent, have experienced the brunt of job losses during the downturn.

Afrocity does not want to come to the abrubt conclusion that she is actually living the American Dream now that she is a renter.  I should feel sad about this. Renting is a gamble at long odds. Often renters are at the mercy of landlords who take advantage of tenants.  In NYC my rent increased one year from $2100 a month to $2400.  Then there are times when renters come out on top. But when we do, it usually means that the American Dream is a nightmare for someone else.

My revenge seemed less kind as I watched an infomercial last week on a local Chicago TV station for auctions of foreclosed and “short sale” homes. It looks like we are all losers in the real estate game.

Obama Supporter Couples Therapy Lesson #1:How To Fake An Economic Recovery Orgasm September 8, 2009

obama too bigGood Morning and welcome to Dr. Afrocity’s couples therapy session for Obama supporters. I see you are alone today which is unfortunate because couples therapy always works better when both parties are emotionally invested in the relationship.

What was that?

You say your partner cannot attend couples therapy sessions with you because he is far too busy with his job as President of the United States?

My, my, my what a big job your partner has. I know that you are supportive of his position, after all YOU did elect him for it.

You thought he was the right man for the job and there was no chance of persuading you to think otherwise but let’s not obsess over the minor details of things we cannot CHANGE (wink).

Well, you know what they say, there is no sense in crying  racism over spilled Kool Aid. The reality of your situation is that you are here today alone in Obama supporters couples therapy and your partner is MIA so let’s focus on you and your happiness.

(Dr. Afrocity takes out writing pad)

As clearly as possible tell me what exactly is troubling you about your relationship with President Barack Oabma? Oh,  honey don’t cry your glitter eyeliner is running down your face.

(hands patient a box of Kleenex)

Here lie down on the sofa. You are shaking like a leaf. Are you cold?

(Patient nods head)

Well so much for global warming huh? Let me get you this nice warm red blanket….We will just put this around your shoulders. Oh dear your back is covered with donkey hoof prints…Did he do this to you honey? what is wrong with him?

From Contra Obama.Com

(Patient puts head down)

Hmmm, it is obvious that you have been stepped on by a jackass. You know that right?

(Patient nods)

Are you sure that you want to continue with this relationship.

(Patient nods)

You say this crisis gives the two of you the opportunity to grow as a couple? (Dr. Afrocity rolls eyes) Okay, princess it’s your money your time. Tell me what’s wrong…

(Dr. Afrocity poised to write notes on pad) …He  promised to stimulate you economically but lately he has not kept his promise to you and you have resorted to economically stimulating yourself?

(Patient nods)

That is a serious problem my dear… He showed you his big recovery package, it impressed you at first. It was big, the biggest you had ever seen…You tingled at the thought of unraveling its mysteries…But turns out it was a big impotent nothing and now you are economically unstimulated and you are faking it…Going through the motions of a fake economic recovery orgasm is never easy.

(Patient blowing nose in Kleenex, crying uncontrollably)

(Dr. Afrocity puts on H1N1 protective mask)

You are so lucky to have found me (smiles). You have certainly come to the right place. First, lets take a look at the right way to fake an economic recovery orgasm. I found this great article that may be of help, it even bashes a Republican so as an Obama supporter I am sure you will love it:

From Mother Jones Magazine:

Michael Steele, Here’s a Newspaper Article You Should Read

— By David Corn | Fri September 4, 2009 12:06 PM PST

On slow news days—that is, when Dick Cheney or Sarah Palin haven’t said anything—there’s always GOP chairman Michael Steele.

He made website headlines earlier this week when he chastised a 23-year-old woman after she had interrupted him at a Howard University meeting to say that everyone in the country deserved access to good health care, citing the case of her own mother who recently died of cancer because she couldn’t afford chemo medications. Then on Friday, Steele looked particularly out of it within a Washington Post story on the stimulus and the economy.

The front-page article reported that “economists generally agree that the package has played a significant part in stabilizing the economy. They are less certain about the size of the impact.” The piece quoted a former assistant Treasury secretary from the Bush-Cheney administration, Phillip Swagel, who said President Obama’s stimulus package is “starting to play a role, helping us to have slightly positive rather than slightly negative GDP growth.” It cited IHS Global Insight, an economic consulting firm, which estimated the stimulus has added 1 percent to gross domestic product this year. Mark Zandi, chief economist of Economy.com and a former John McCain supporter, told the newspaper, “I don’t think it’s any accident that the economy has gone out of recession and into recovery at the same time stimulus is providing its maximum economic impact.”

So there’s a consensus: the stimulus package has produced results. Enter Steele. The article reported,
On Thursday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele discounted the impact of the stimulus plan. “Vice President Biden has been trying for 200 days to convince the American people the president’s economic stimulus experiment is working, but just like their government-run health-care scheme, no one is buying it,” he said.

Obviously, Steele had not consulted with Zandi, Swagel, IHS Global Insight, or most economists. There are indeed questions an administration foe can raise about the stimulus. Has it been quick enough? Big enough? Targeted correctly? Is the bang worth the bucks? Only a hack with no regard for reality would insist that it has absolutely not worked and that no one believes it has had an impact. Yet that’s what Steele said, proving once again that he is a guy who’s hard to take seriously.

Now wasn’t that article liberally refreshing? If you are not feeling economically stimulated, you just fake it by refuting the evidence with counter evidence from liberally biased economist that are in your corner. In times of trouble you must take appropriate actions by calling for a backup of emotional support. Who cares if what they are saying to comfort you is right or wrong as long as it makes you feel good about your support for Barack Obama, right? Also if you slander a few Republicans along the way like Sarah Palin or Michael Steele that’s even better, now isn’t my jackass loving darling???

There now, that’s the Obamabot we all know and love. I knew there was a smile beneath all of that doubt. Now go home, watch two hours of MSNBC and call me in the morning.

Saturday Toons: The Hope and Change All You Can’t Eat Buffet September 5, 2009

obama grannyHave you ever gone to an “all you can eat buffet” ?

If you have, more than likely you were met at the restaurant door by a beaming hostess willing to give you a nice clean white dinner plate and plastic tumbler for your iced tea.

A smorgasbord of nutritional wealth awaits you.

Depending upon the cuisine, you may have a hanker for those crab rangoons and pad thai chicken; you may go ga ga over the pancakes and sticky buns; graze at the salad offerings.

So many vertically aligned food choices, so little time. Gee this is fun, buffets with bottomless deficits are the stuff liberals are made of.

It is estimated that over 50 million people have passed through the Obama “hope and change” buffet.

Mouthing “Yes we Can” to themselves as they grab that white plate and wait in line for the refreshing leadership they so craved and deserved.  They were getting hungry out there in “Bush Country”. Life was so terrible out there.

With all of the romance of yesteryear’s Camelot, Obama’s supporters want that piece of the pie they were promised.  However, amid all the shining happy liberals holding hands there is a cloud hovering over the hope and change buffet.  Famous for not keeping his promises, President Barack Obama has remarkably made the meal selection process less painstaking.

Nothing truly appetizing lies in the stainless steel food chambers. I see some grease filmed cream of arugula soup, crusty vegetable medley casserole straight from Michelle Obama’s White House garden. The menu shows an abundance of crow. It is safe to assume that the food must be good, the flies seem to think so but why is everyone just standing here?  Suddenly press secretary Robert Gibbs voice is piped in through a loud speaker, interrupting a beautiful rendition of “At Last” by house speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“Ahem, idio- I mean people please walk, don’t run to the buffet. In response to the great demand on President Obama by corporate hacks and lobbyists that he said would have no part in his administration, there may be a few minor delays in the food getting out to you. For ease of selection you all will be getting served a whopping huge plate of nothing.”

Food is getting so low at the hope and change buffet that Obama supporters have resorted to cannibalism. A finger was bit off the hand of a conservative this week and savagely devoured by a rabid moonbat.

Wow, a huge plate of nothing. Now there’s a palate pleaser. Certainly, the road to recovery will be long and hard for the millions crowded ’round the hope and change buffet.  I must say from the looks of complacency, they are all taking this pretty well. Come Oscar time, we are sure to see accolades delved out to the liberals for playing the “patience is a virtue, even tho’ it sucks”  role with such convincing authenticity.

Hey, someone better get Rosie some food she looks pretty hungry.

From the Wall Street Journal:

The Jobless Stimulus

It’s still not too late to redirect $400 billion to business tax cuts.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2009

The recession may be over on Wall Street and Silicon Valley, but on Working Family Avenue it still has a ways to run. That’s the lesson of yesterday’s August jobs report that showed losses of 216,000, which believe it or not is the slowest monthly decline in a year and caused the White House to praise with the faint damn that the “trajectory is in the right direction.” That’s the good news.

On the other hand, the jobless rate popped up to 9.7%, the highest rate in 26 years, from 9.4%, reflecting an increase in the size of the labor force. The main concern we see going forward is the slow pace of new job creation to soak up the 7.4 million workers who have lost jobs since 2007.

There are now 26 million Americans who can’t find a full-time job. Average weekly hours remained at an abysmally low 33.1—which is putting a strain on family budgets. And the jobless rate including so-called discouraged workers, or those who have stopped looking, leapt to 16.8% from 16.3% in July. Meanwhile, the number of Americans working part-time who want full-time work increased by 278,000 to 9.1 million, which as a share of the workforce is larger than at any time since the recession of 1982. These are the workers that employers will tend to hire first as a recovery unfolds, so it is worrisome that this cohort remains so large.

None of this does much for the credibility of the Obama Administration’s stimulus spending plan, which was sold with the promise of a jobless rate this year of “below 8%” if the stimulus were passed. That was off by some three million jobs in a mere seven months. The same economists who fretted in February that $780 billion in stimulus was too small now claim that the $300 billion or so that has been spent has somehow ignited the recovery.

But a tax-cutting stimulus would have provided much more job and economic growth for the buck, and it could even now too. If the Administration really wants to fire up private job creation, how about taking the remaining $400 billion or more and using it to lower business taxes? The unspent stimulus is enough for a two-year down payment on repealing the U.S. corporate income tax, which studies show is a job and wage-increase killer.

Congress could also reconsider its July minimum-wage increase of 70 cents an hour, which almost certainly contributed to the leap in teenage unemployment to 25.5% in August. The rate was 24% in June and 23.8% in July, before the wage hike started to price low-skilled teens looking for jobs out of the workplace. Congress would be wise to suspend the increase until the overall jobless rate falls below 7%.

Of course neither of our proposals is going to happen given the current policy views in Washington, but someone has to speak up for workers who want a job, as opposed to those lucky enough to still have them.

Global Plate Warming buffet while Referencing the "Holy Goran" is a sure way to keep your mind off watching the door for the waiters to bring more food. Hey how did he get that tiurkey leg when you have nothing????

Global Plate Warming buffet while the legendary man bear pig, references the "Holy Goran" is a sure way to keep your mind off watching the door for the waiters to bring more food. Hey how did he get that turkey leg when you have nothing????

At the beginning, I knew that the hope and change buffet was a bunch of baloney. There was a huge amount of illusion going on in the Obama campaign. Illusion leads to disillusionment which hopefully leads to no reelection in 2012. This is a sensitive subject for Obama’s supporters. Afraid to admit they were taken in by the pied piper, they create distractions by charging racism. There is no racism at the hope and change buffet. None of you are being served. You can sit wherever you want, as long as you realize that all will equally get nothing in return for your support. Botch and whine stew is a perennial favorite among liberals. Your dear leader has seen to it that you have plenty of opportunities to enjoy your hoped cooked culinary concoction while pussyfooting around what really matters to you and your family at the same time. President Doubtfire will promise you an eclipse on Christmas day, but I doubt you will ever need to get out your safety glasses.

“Maybe Next Term”: Portrait of a Presidential Rookie August 25, 2009

Image From Big Fur Hat/I Own The World.com

Image From Big Fur Hat/I Own The World.com

I want to thank my dear reader “Bud White” for drawing to my attention, yesterday’s Wall Street Journal piece entitled, “Obama’s Summer of Discontent”

Such realistic dialogue coming from the media is refreshing is to see as it exposes the tensions between our rookie president and his supporters. Obviously I am using the term “supporters” in a broad sense.

Voters are supporters.

Corporations are supporters as many contributed money to Obama’s presidential campaign fund. Despite what our president promised during his campaign, there is now some proof surfacing that lobbyists (the dreaded “L” word) actually did have a hand in his election.

Unions are supporters and while it is unethical, the various media outlets can be construed as supporters. Only a supporter would describe a “tingling feeling” up his leg while delivering “the news” to a public audience.

In yesterday’s Autographed Letter Signed posting, I highlighted a Washington Examiner article with a somewhat similar title to that of the WSJ piece. Penned, “The thrill is gone for Obama and the media”, as if on cue, we are beginning to the media come to their senses.

With any rookie, we want him to succeed if he is on our team and even if he is not, he is still playing the same game that effects us all.

One misstep on the part of a rookie president could resonate as a tremendous loss for all Americans of all political persuasions.

You may ask why I chose to allude to Obama as a “rookie” ? Isn’t every first term president a rookie? Sure, but some are more wet behind the ears than others as noted in this aforementioned Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

Obama’s Summer of Discontent
The politics of charisma is so Third World. Americans were never going to buy into it for long.

By FOUAD AJAMI

The leader would be different things to different people. The Obama coalition was the coming together of disparate groups: the white professional liberals seeking absolution for the country in the election of an African-American man, the opponents of the Iraq war who grew more strident as the project in Iraq was taking root, the African-American community that had been invested in the Clintons and then came around out of an understandable pride in one of its own.

The last segment of the electorate to flock to the Obama banners were the blue-collar workers who delivered him Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. He was not their man. They fully knew that he didn’t share their culture. They were, by his portrait, clinging to their guns and religion, but the promise of economic help, and of protectionism, carried the day with them.

The Obama devotees were the victims of their own belief in political magic. The devotees could not make up their minds. In a newly minted U.S. senator from Illinois, they saw the embodiment of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Like Lincoln, Mr. Obama was tall and thin and from Illinois, and the historic campaign was launched out of Springfield. The oath of office was taken on the Lincoln Bible. Like FDR, he had a huge economic challenge, and he better get it done, repair and streamline the economy in his “first hundred days.” Like JFK, he was young and stylish, with a young family.

All this hero-worship before Mr. Obama met his first test of leadership. In reality, he was who he was, a Chicago politician who had done well by his opposition to the Iraq war. He had run a skillful campaign, and had met a Clinton machine that had run out of tricks and a McCain campaign that never understood the nature of the contest of 2008.

Artist Norman Rockwell's "The Rookie"

Artist Norman Rockwell's "The Rookie"

Did you know that my favorite sport is baseball?

My two favorite teams are the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox. Being a Chicagoan makes the Cubs a likely connection for me, the Red Sox not so likely. Graduate school in Boston is what indoctrinated me into the RED SOX NATION.

Red Sox fever was contagious, I lived across the street from Fenway Park. Boston being a walking town, made for nice spring time walks down Boylston Street. On game days, the “T” was crowded, antiquated and slow.

Coming home from Harvard, I would take the red line “T” to Newberry Street and walk the rest of the way home. The sidewalks were filled with families padded with bottled water and Red Sox nation gear.

At the time, Boston had not yet captured a World Series Championship. The fans did not care, they still paid big bucks to see their team beat the “Curse of the Babino”

That year, the Red Sox and the Cubs had a lot in common. Both teams had a large number of devotees despite their comparative losing streaks. If you were either a Cubs or a Red Sox fan you were well acquainted with the “summer of discontent”.

While growing up, not only did I watch every Cubs game faithfully on the television, I also took trips to my local library to read sports magazines about baseball.

To me baseball was life and it was a game that made sense. By comparison, football was just a bunch of guys on a field who liked to pile up on each other but baseball was a mental sport. It was more civilized and a damn good way to pass three hours of time when I wanted to forget about my problems. Given that the first live Cubs game I would ever see in person would be at the old Yankee Stadium in 2005, I was a pretty loyal armchair fan as mother and I could never afford tickets to see the Cubs play at Wrigley.

My loser team was lovable and “Maybe Next Year” became my mantra.

To what extent I actually believed that the Cubs would ever win a World Series was questionable.

However, in baseball is there really distinction between reality and fantasy?

If so, does that distinction extend to the realm of politics? After all we now play fantasy baseball. Is there such a glorious beast as a fantasy president?

Ajami continues:

…He was no FDR, and besides the history of the depression—the real history—bears little resemblance to the received narrative of the nation instantly rescued, in the course of 100 days or 200 days, by an interventionist state. The economic distress had been so deep and relentless that FDR began his second term, in 1937, with the economy still in the grip of recession.

Nor was JFK about style. He had known military service and combat, and familial loss; he had run in 1960 as a hawk committed to the nation’s victory in the Cold War. He and his rival, Richard Nixon, shared a fundamental outlook on American power and its burdens.

Now that realism about Mr. Obama has begun to sink in, these iconic figures of history had best be left alone. They can’t rescue the Obama presidency. Their magic can’t be his. Mr. Obama isn’t Lincoln with a BlackBerry. Those great personages are made by history, in the course of history, and not by the spinners or the smitten talking heads.

In His painting "The Dugout" Norman Rockwell, captures the fate of the Chicago Cubs on May 23, 1948

In His painting "The Dugout" Norman Rockwell, captures the fate of the Chicago Cubs on May 23, 1948

When we are rooting for a losing team, we place much hope in “the rookie”. The rookie will give the seasoned guys a shot in the arm via envy or a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the game. With the Cubs, my favorite rookie was pitcher Greg Maddux. In September of 1986, Maddux started for the Cubs and was the youngest pitcher in the MLB. His first outing resulted in a complete game win for the Cubs. Maddux was my hero as Cubs rookie pitcher Kerry Woods would become nearly a decade later. Is this fair to the rookie, to become the end all and be all for a team? To become the “hope and change” that they hunger for?

…Ronald Reagan, it should be recalled, had been swept into office by a wave of dissatisfaction with Jimmy Carter and his failures. At the core of the Reagan mission was the recovery of the nation’s esteem and self-regard. Reagan was an optimist. He was Hollywood glamour to be sure, but he was also Peoria, Ill. His faith in the country was boundless, and when he said it was “morning in America” he meant it; he believed in America’s miracle and had seen it in his own life, in his rise from a child of the Depression to the summit of political power.

The failure of the Carter years was, in Reagan’s view, the failure of the man at the helm and the policies he had pursued at home and abroad. At no time had Ronald Reagan believed that the American covenant had failed, that America should apologize for itself in the world beyond its shores. There was no narcissism in Reagan. It was stirring that the man who headed into the sunset of his life would bid his country farewell by reminding it that its best days were yet to come.

In contrast, there is joylessness in Mr. Obama. He is a scold, the “Yes we can!” mantra is shallow, and at any rate, it is about the coming to power of a man, and a political class, invested in its own sense of smarts and wisdom, and its right to alter the social contract of the land. In this view, the country had lost its way and the new leader and the political class arrayed around him will bring it back to the right path.

"The Three Umpires" by Norman Rockwell

"The Three Umpires" by Norman Rockwell

That being quoted, I will pose my question again.

Is it fair to the rookie to become the end all and be all for a team (country)?

I suppose the answer depends upon the rookie in question.
